Jerry was one of the greatest guys I have ever known. We were friends since birth as our parents were close. The line in the obituary beginning with, "His steadfast honesty favored no one..." is spot on - he was devoid of hyperbola - the most centered and grounded person I have known.

Dear Barb:
Phyllis sent me today Jerry's obituary. I am so very sorry to learn of his death.
I think quite often of all the fun Gilda and I had with Jerry and all the fun you, Jerry, Gilda and I had together on the tennis courts, at Ben's and elsewhere.
I know there is nothing that I can do for you, but wanted you to know I was thinking of you.
Take care,
David Herndon

I was very sorry to hear about Jerry's passing. I have to say Jerry and I weren't really close friends, but I got to know him through his involvement with the LPGA Rail Charity Classic (later State Farm Classic). I covered the event for The State Journal-Register, and I remember having conversations with Jerry about how the tournament was going, etc. I especially enjoyed his stories about how everyone -- definitely including Jerry --- tried to keep the tournament afloat in its early years. He had a great sense of humor, too. His involvement with the golf tournament was just part of his commitment to the Springfield community in general. My condolences go out to Jerry's family.
