Tribute & Message From The Family

Joe Kelly died on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at his home in Springfield. He was born February 13, 1955 in Springfield to Irene Elizabeth Flammini Kelly and Amos Calvin Kelly. He was a graduate of Saint Joseph's Grade School and Lanphier High School. Early in his life, Joe worked in construction alongside his brother, Jim, as a cement finisher. He was a part-time photographer and was employed in the delivery and production departments of the State Journal Register for over 35 years.

He was an avid bowler, softball player, and golfer. He was a devoted Houston Astros, Washington Redskins, and Star Trek fan. He loved to dance, tell stories and jokes, and often times was his own best audience, but he will be most remembered for his boisterous, distinctive, and highly contagious laugh.

Joe enjoyed gardening and growing tomatoes, taking vacations and celebrating Saint Patrick's Day. He always enjoyed a good party and a good game of poker, but the true passion in Joe's life was his daughter, Annie. They shared a love of video games, movies, Disney World, jumping on the trampoline, all things Science Fiction, and macaroni and cheese.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Kelly McDonald. He is survived by his daughter, Annie Kelly of Springfield; brothers, Thomas Kelly of Springfield and James Kelly of Rochester; sister, Irene (Steve) Pasley of Chatham; brother-in-law, Stan McDonald of Girard; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews across the country.

Joe lived life to the fullest and had a generous and loving Irish heart. He will be deeply missed by everyone he worked with, laughed with, lived with and loved.

Cremation will be accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.

The family will host a celebration of Joe's life at the Maloney house, 2029 Peoria Rd., on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory may be made to Anne E. Kelly Education Fund, in care of Marine Bank, 3050 Wabash Ave., Springfield, IL 62704.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Joe was always fun to work with and we graduated from Lanphier the same year! I know he will no longer be suffering, but up in heaven with all his family and friends keeping them laughing with his unending jokes and quirky sense of humor!! Was privileged to have called him a friend!

Annie, I never met you but wanted to send a note. Your dad Joe was one of my best friends when I lived in Springfield. We became friends back about 18 years of age and across the next decade I had some of my best times in Springfield with your dad. I have a lot of childhood friend in Toronto and used to visit for long weekends whenever I could. Joe came with me 2, maybe 3 times on those trips. We would drive all night, hang with my Canada friends for a day or two, then drive all day to get back for work. Something only young guys are likely to do. My friends up there remember your dad well.

I have googled your dad a number of times of late, trying to find out what was happening in his life. We was a good, important friend to me and I have missed him for years. He was always there when I needed him; we laughed a ridiculous amount. Breaks my heart I didn't get to see him one more time and share our families. I am very happy to learn that he had you, Annie.

I can still see him and hear him like yesterday Annie. I'm sure I am just one of a large number of people who hold Joe in our hearts. He is distributed across all of us now.
