Kathleen Joann Bates, 60, of Springfield, died at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at St. John's Hospital.

Kathleen was born on November 30, 1953 in Alton, the daughter of Keith and Loretta Wachter Martin. She married Michael Edward Fifer in 2006 in Springfield; he preceded her in death on January 28, 2013.

Kathleen attended Southeast High School and volunteered at the breadline. She was known for her very caring spirit and always put everyone else first. She had many pen pals and enjoyed drawing and reading.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her three sons, David Ashby of Springfield, Brian (wife, Lorene) Bates of Chatham, and James Bates of Springfield; three grandsons, Austin, Lucas and Jackson Bates of Chatham; and two half-brothers, James Tucker of FL and Gene Tucker of TX.

Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.

Graveside ceremony will be hosted by the family at Roselawn Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014 with Pastor David Bueltmann officiating.
